Frequently Asked Questions
What is a Private Autism or ADHD Assessment?
A private assessment is a thorough evaluation conducted by qualified clinicians in a private setting. The process includes structured interviews, standardised tools, observations, and developmental history to understand patterns of behaviour, communication, attention, and executive functioning. The goal is to determine whether someone meets criteria for autism, ADHD, or both.
How is a Private Assessment different from an NHS Assessment?
Private assessments follow the same diagnostic criteria as NHS assessments but usually have much shorter waiting times. With Oxford Neurodiversity Clinic, we can often schedule assessments within about two months, and reports are usually provided within two weeks maximum after the assessment. In contrast, NHS waiting lists for autism and ADHD can be very long, with many people waiting 2-5 years or more for the first appointment in many areas, sometimes much longer than recommended. NICE guidance says waiting should be no more than 13 weeks, but most people wait far longer than this on the NHS.
How much does a Private Assessment cost?
Fees vary depending on the type of assessment and what is included. You can view up-to-date pricing on our fees page here: https://oxfordneurodiversity.com/fees/
How long does an assessment take?
From first contact to receiving your written report, the process usually takes 4–6 weeks. The assessment appointment itself typically lasts 3–5 hours, depending on whether it’s an autism assessment, ADHD assessment, or a combined assessment for both conditions.
What happens during an assessment?
- Free Consultation (30 minutes): Telephone or Zoom call to discuss concerns and next steps.
- Pre-Assessment Questionnaires: These help clinicians understand your experiences and history.
- Face-to-Face Clinical Assessment: At our Raleigh Park clinic, using evidence-based tools like ADOS-2 for autism, clinical interviews, and observation.
- Observation and Clinical Judgement: Review of behaviour patterns and co-occurring conditions.
- Diagnosis and Feedback: You receive the diagnostic outcome at the end of the assessment day and this includes a short discussion on next steps.
What support do you provide to help people prepare for the assessment day?
We know that knowing what to expect can significantly reduce anxiety. For adults and young people, we always provide a clear schedule outlining what the assessment day will look like, including timings and breaks. For younger children, we create a personalised social story using simple, child-friendly language to explain what will happen and who they will meet. This helps children feel more prepared and comfortable when attending the clinic.
What is a combined assessment?
A combined assessment is when we assess for both autism and ADHD together in the same appointment. Many people have traits of both, and this approach gives a complete picture in one process.
Will my GP accept a private diagnosis?
Yes. Diagnoses from qualified clinicians following NICE guidelines are recognised by GPs. A private diagnosis can help with accessing reasonable adjustments at work or in education.
Will private health insurance cover the cost of an assessment?
Most UK private health insurance plans do not cover autism or ADHD diagnostic assessments. These conditions are usually excluded from standard coverage because they are developmental rather than acute medical events. Some insurers might cover related consultations in rare cases, but this is not the norm. Oxford Neurodiversity Clinic does not fall under the NHS “Right to Choose” scheme, and major insurers such as Bupa typically do not cover these assessments. Always check directly with your insurer if you are unsure.
